What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency should never have to wait. Foundation Dental operates an open chair policy - we always maintain availability for patients in pain or with an acute dental concern, so you can get the care you need the same day you call.

Seek same-day care for:
Severe toothache or spontaneous tooth pain
Dental abscess - swelling in the gum, jaw, or face; fever; or a foul taste in the mouth
Dental trauma
Cracked, broken, or fractured tooth causing pain
Lost crown or filling causing pain or sensitivity
Soft tissue injury - cuts to the gums, lips, tongue, or cheeks
Broken dental appliance causing pain or injury
Significant swelling in the mouth, jaw, or neck
If you experience severe swelling spreading to your neck or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or high fever with facial swelling, go to the nearest emergency room immediately. These are signs of an infection that requires urgent medical attention.
What to Do in a Dental Emergency
Dental Trauma
If an adult tooth comes out due to an injury, acting quickly can improve the chances of saving it. Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part you normally see) and avoid touching the root. If the tooth is dirty, gently rinse it with milk or saline-do not scrub or wipe it.
If you feel comfortable doing so, gently place the tooth back into its socket and bite down on a clean cloth or gauze to help hold it in place. If you cannot put the tooth back in, keep it moist by placing it in milk.
Contact us right away for an emergency dental visit. The sooner the tooth can be treated and repositioned, the better the chance of saving it-ideally within 30 to 60 minutes.
Severe toothache
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed. Do not apply aspirin directly to the gum or tooth. Call us for a same-day appointment.
Broken or cracked tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold pack to your cheek to reduce swelling. Save any broken pieces and call us straight away.

You can temporarily reattach a crown using dental cement from a pharmacy (such as Fixodent or Dentemp) - do not use superglue. Call us for an appointment as soon as possible.
