Sedation Options at Foundation Dental

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)

Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative gas breathed through a small nose mask during your appointment. It creates a pleasant, relaxed feeling within minutes - reducing anxiety without putting you to sleep. You remain fully conscious and able to communicate throughout.

Nitrous oxide clears within 5 minutes of removing the mask, so you can drive yourself home after your appointment. This makes it a wonderfully practical option for routine visits and shorter procedures.

Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed sedative medication approximately one hour before your appointment. You will feel deeply relaxed throughout the procedure. Most patients have little to no memory of the appointment afterwards, and many describe it as the most comfortable dental experience they have ever had.

Because the effects last several hours, you will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from the clinic and stay with you for the rest of the day.

  • Yes. Sedation in a dental clinic setting is safe when administered by trained professionals following established protocols. Our team is trained in sedation monitoring and emergency response. Before your appointment, we will review your full medical history and current medications to confirm the right sedation option for you.

  • A light meal a few hours before is fine.

  • Nitrous oxide is covered under some plans. The CDCP covers minimal sedation (laughing gas and oral sedation) . Coverage varies by plan -we will help you work through your benefits.

  • After nitrous oxide: yes, once the effects have cleared, typically within 5 to 10 minutes. After oral sedation: you will need a responsible adult to accompany you home and stay with you for the rest of the day.

  • Nitrous oxide is safe and commonly used for children. For very young children or those with significant needs, we can discuss referral options for clinic-based general anesthesia.
